Located just north of Times Square the restaurant isn't hard to find. The exterior is so well decorated the three blind mice could "see" the restaurant.
As with most Manhattan restaurants I always suggest reservations. This restaurant is also on opentable The restaurant is casual dining, with the laid back atmosphere. The décor is what I would describe as pre war "vintage" Asian. The focal point of the restaurant is a series of large lanterns and a large mural at the rear of the restaurant.
Ruby Foo's is rather large, which makes it difficult to understand why the seating and tables are tight! So tight you may be asked by a guest at an adjacent table to move so they can get up or sit down.
Dinners seem to be a mix of business workers, tourists, and families with a sprinkle of single diners. If you plan on taking children go at off peak hours. Although large, my most recent visit, the restaurant was over half empty. In the past, I've seen a long wait-list and not a single empty table.
The service was very good. Our server was engaging and really into and on top of his job. He took our orders and gave wine suggestions. He knew a great deal about the menu and items used in each dish and it was greatly appreciated. This was the best service, I've experienced here.
We started with the Tamarind Spare Ribs, and the lettuce wraps. The Ribs were delicious and the wraps decent. We continued by ordering the Tempura Shrimp, Chilean Sea Bass, my absolute favorite roll, the Spicy Salmon Lollipop roll and an order of shrimp and crab fried rice. The presentation was nice nice and our server again went over our choices. The tempura was standard, the sea bass super light and the lollipop, hits on all levels. The fried rice was very weak, bland and looked old. The rice was too soft for my taste. The ribs and the Lollipop roll are "must try" items.
My overall opinion, based on this experience, is that Ruby Foo's is not an abysmal tourist trap but a somewhat decent place to have a casual meal. I think the price was consistent with other chains, given its location, although some might think the price point to be too high.
This is a good location to meet for drink, a group gathering or if you just starting your evening out.
