Havana - Alma de Cuba

Dropped into Havana - Alma de Cuba as a last minute choice.  Once you step in your transported to a little village on the isle of Cuba.

The restaurant is very casual but cramped.  This is not a “romantic” type of restaurant; it’s a place that you go when you have planned in advance.

The décor is dark wood with native mural and tables are very close so there isn’t much ambiance so to speak.  The restaurant is loud and not very kid friendly.  There is a full bar at opposite end of the restaurant and that area became very crowded.  So crowded that patrons encroached upon the few tables at the rear of the restaurant.  I don’t consider an ass in your plate is not what I consider a “unique” dining experience.

Ordered drinks which were just marginal.  For my appetizer, I ordered the garlic shrimp.  Willie ordered the sweet Plantains and whole grilled corn with cheese.

My shrimp was solid, although the sauce was a bit heavy with garlic.  Willie’s corn smelled and tasted delish.  I didn’t try the plantains as they showed up after our entrees arrived.

I ordered the skirt steak (lower pic) for my entrée and it was a bit tough for my taste.  Willie’s Mata Hambre was moist and tasty.

My overall impression is that the food was marginal and nothing to rave about.

The service was uneven, as one minute our server was over attentive and the next we couldn’t get his attention.  In addition, he forgot one of our appetizers and that came out after our entree.

I wouldn’t recommend or suggest that anyone visit Havana – Alma de Cuba other than to see the older gent roll hand made cigars in the front window.
