ABOVE NEW YORK CITY

New York City has one of the most impressive skylines in the world and there is nothing like flying into New York airspace, up the Hudson or East River and taking in the Manhattan Skyline.

My favorite time to take pictures of the city from above is at dawn or dusk as I think Manhattan is most spectacular at those times of the day.

If you’re seated on the left side of the plane when departing the city via LaGuardia runway 31, in the early morning on a clear day, you get a view of Manhattan, from approximately 155 Street to Midtown.

Most often when returning to the city, my flight path is over the bay and up either the Hudson or East River. This flight path provides great photo opportunities to catch Manhattan in all its glory from directly above.  At night this is spectacular especially when you look down on Midtown.   This year I’m going to try to get a good shot of that.

Lately when returning home, the flight path goes over Brooklyn and Queens with provides great shots of Downtown Brooklyn and Jersey City and great wall photos of eastern Manhattan.  This flight path shows exactly how dense Manhattan is.

On occasion I’ll take a flight that departs from Newark.  Based on you're departure route you can get a good shot of Manhattan.

Enough from above the city.  Time to go out and explore it!
