In the mood for seafood and Willie suggested Fish Tail. He had eaten there prior and gave the restaurant high marks.
I arrived before Willie so I had an opportunity to scope out the place. Fishtail is really the tail of two restaurants. Upstairs is the formal dining room and downstairs is the relaxed bar room. There is a great bar, a carefree atmosphere and the staff is hip and fun. Upstairs is a place I would go for a special occasion or intimate dinner. Downstairs is more relaxed and good to start off a group evening or a late night meal.
We had a reservation for upstairs but its to stuffy for two guys just hanging out.
So we're assigned a booth and settle in. While reviewing the menu we see a parade of amazing dishes come out of the kitchen. The ladies in the next booth order an appetizer that looked and smelled delicious. I had to ask what item it was as I couldn't find it on the menu. When the waitress comes to take our order, I tell her I want the appetizer they have. The waitress informs me that it's a special order but says she 'll check to see what can be done. When she returns she says it can be done. Willie ordered the mussels.
Both of our appetizers were amazing!
For our entrees, Willie ordered the Porgie special and I ordered the Dover Sole. My Sole was moist and flavorful, but Willie's Porgie was better. For a super expensive imported fish, the Dover sole didn't knock my socks off. It was good, but not as good as my appetizer.
While we were eating the chef came out to talk to the people a the next table and asked how I liked my food. I told him how much I enjoyed my appetizer and he said he made it up on the fly. I told him it should be added tot the menu!
Usually I don't order desert but we were having a great time. I ordered a smore, but it was really a brownie and Willie ordered the tort! Both hit on all cylinders. The Pastry chef came out see how we liked everything. I love brownies and this brownie was perfect and the Carmel toasted walnuts and ice cream were a perfect pairing.
The chefs and the manager came over to check how we liked our meal, sense we were there for what seems like forever.
They tell us about the bar menu so I had to have an Orange Creamsicle Milkshake. I was sooooo good!
Although I was skeptical of the fishtail, the end result was a great meal with a great friend. The front of house staff was polite and accommodating and set the tone for a great evening. The bar and wait staff knowledgeable of the menu and were able to make the proper suggestions. The executive chef and management approachable and a blast to hang out with.
I highly recommend Fishtail. It's pricey but the overall experience is justified.
